Well it has happened after a long fight with money problems, family problems and test anxiety, I have passed step 2.
I started this journey in 2003, I was 39 and wanted to change my life as an RN. I wanted to either go to be an NP or MD.
MD won out but it was not without heartache and sacrifice.
Loans, to get the loans needed, I needed to fix my credit. Fixing my credit took a year.
I then sold my house.
I prepared and left for studies in England late 2004. Student loans, medical school, wife and child in tow.
After a year at that school had broken promises and the school was falling apart so I applied and was accepted at another Caribbean school. I started from beginning day one MD 1 at St. James.
2006 looked up new school new student loan (Sallie Mae) future looked bright.
Passed ever course and test for basic science white coat April 2007 then back to states for step 1 study and clinical science.
Summer of 2007, Sallie Mae and the whole home mortgage system crashed, they sent a letter: no more student loans after this year. I was panicked! I started looking for Caribbean school loans. Found out the only good solid sources was big Caribbean 3 AUC, SGU and Ross due to grandfather clause and US student loans.
With the stress of no money, a daughter and son teenagers needing lots of attention and the USMLE to pass I was overwhelmed.
During nursing school and medical school my heart always raced and I panicked some during tests but I always did ok.
I did not study for step 1 well and I had terrible test anxiety during the test. I had to restudy and retake step 1 a few times to pass. I passed only after a lot of question practice and controlling my anxiety better.
I had more and more problems with my school, I ended up transferring to All Saints (Aureus now) so my cores were done properly. (2009)
More problems with my youngest son and financial problems mounting, I again had mounting pressures and anxiety.
Step 2 proved to be harder than I thought but I found a way to pass it.
Since mid 2008 I have only found money to help with one semester, my wonderful mother in law paid tuition and most fees.
We lived very poor not being able to pay rent some months to get me through.
Now passed step 1, step 2 and I need a residency. I would prefer Family medicine but internal would be fine too.
My dream is to practice in an area of the US where doctors are needed. How much I make is not important.
My wife supports this. Children are now on own, my daughter is having a baby any day now and youngest son married and going in the Navy.
With ECMFG having verified my diploma and transcripts I'm ready.
I know some of you may be able to help, if so then please email me
