I have had a lot of comments so far about my story and the current situation. One person who I talked to years ago posted.
Of the reasons I blog, one of the most important to me is to tell the real story of the FMG and Caribbean schools.
Most of us attended undergrad in the USA and then desired to go to medical school but found the US schools out of reach. We are qualified but in reality only 40% of qualified people get accepted in US schools due to limited seats each year.
It costs thousands and time to apply to US schools.
The Caribbean has been the savior for many of us and the crucifier for others.
Years ago when I spoke with people ( before 2007) I had a loan and a few schools had the same loan program and I expected, as others did, for the US economy to pick up and loans to be available for Medical students again.
It did not happen, and now I feel it will never happen. I think you prepare to pay for this with loans from relatives or go to one of the big three or forget medical school. This is hard and a struggle and if it was easy many more would do it.
I have had extraordinary struggles in the last few years but I will succeed one way or another.
I was one of the lucky ones who could finish and get my Degree, many do not and many that go today will not, the Caribbean is not "Pay and you shall receive"
It's "Pay and you shall work your butt off to Pass" you get your degree same as in the USA, you pass your classes and you pass the USMLE.
The Caribbean uses the same material
You have review material and courses like Kaplan
You have time
You do the same US clinicals with US doctors
In the end people pass or fail due to themselves, nothing will be handed to you.
To those in the past I have given my opinions, I believed what I said and if my opinion is different in 2011 its because things change and we must change with them.
I will be posting Part two of the Caribbean by the end of August after my Board exam.
I will discuss the Big 3 ( AUC, SGU and Ross) plus Saba and then 10 other schools that are worth looking into in the Caribbean.
As always your comments are welcomed.
Good Luck!
You keep your focus and you will succeed!
