I have a new thought for premeds..........

Of late I have had to read "I found out I have a learning disability so this is the reason for my low GPA". OK so this person may not have the Ability to become a Physician.

We have been lied to by our elders. They have told us that all we need to do is "Work Hard and we will Succeed". No you have to have the ability to perform the Job at hand to succeed.

Being a physician is getting it right and understanding the problem almost all the time, not just 50% of the time.

Edit: Add these definitions:

Ability means, you have the intellectual ability to succeed.
Desire is wanting to succeed and wanting to do something.

Ability in this case is not being accepted or money, its your ability to learn, capacity to learn.

No everyone can learn anything and everything. Many people have limits.

This post sums it up:

"OK my thoughts.............

2.9 half way is a problem

Solutions

Pull up to the 3.2 GPA area if possible then have a shot at DO schools
Get at least 3.0 and have a shot at Post bac to prove yourself

Alternative will have to be Caribbean if you cannot do these or do something else.

If it seems tough, its because it is.

Is it doable? Yes
Can you do it? That is what proving yourself is all about.

No magic
No easy
No Hard work will get you there,

WHAT? yes no hard work will lead to success, Ability is what you need.
While College and classes and Medicine all share hard work, ability is success.
Failure does not equal lazy for many people, failure at times shows the lack of ability.

If you have the ability then you can succeed."

You can increase your ability to learn in some cases.

For instance, if your poor in biochemistry you can go back and review the concepts in organic chemistry, this builds the foundation for biochemistry in medical school.

I review all the time to increase my ability to learn and understand complex problems in medicine.

But if you are unable to learn the foundation concepts then you will never really understand the more complex. So you will not have the ability.

When in undergrad, premed one may find they are unable to succeed at the science courses despite desire and "Hard Work" if this is the case then they may find they do not have the ability to be a physician. Its not for everyone.

Not sure what you actually mean by ability if it is not hard work. Please advise as to what hard work in your interpretation means?

Thanks

I will also edit my main post.

Ability means, you have the intellectual ability to succeed.

Just attending school does not mean you are able to learn and understand.

In the US we have equated attending as succeeding. They are not the same.

I enjoy your blog post Dr. Bill, i have three more semesters until i graduate from college, then i will apply to AUC, due to my 3.3 gpa. But i am determined to go up and beyond when i get to med school.

You will do fine, the reason I post these thoughts is to stimulate people in a way to explore their true feelings and abilities.

So far nothing has been easy for me.

I can't wait to be in a residency and I know I will get there.

I love to see people succeed because it means I will too. In a way we are all in this together.

Also I want to be truthful with people. Truth can hurt sometimes.

any tips on study habits..

I'm having trouble with how to digest alot of material.

Dr. Bill said...

WOW digesting a lot of material.

How I do it is on the days of class, its my work day, I go to class, take breaks and go home planning to spend 3 to 4 hours every day 4 days a week ( one day off) then the week ends are premium time and I spend no less then 6 hours each day concentrating on study.

DO not plan on enormous amounts of material, take it one piece at a time, when you know it move on.

When you can, do practice questions about the material this tells you what you know and don't know.

its a good basis for what to look up and study.

DO not restudy what you know its a waste of time. GL
