Too Old For Medical School? Not Dead yet!

Many people worry about how old they are when they are past 20 for some reason.

All of a sudden we reach 20 and we think OK we should be making lots of money and married next, not school.

LOL yeah, my generation and those after are taking longer to settle down and have a career.

The days of graduating highschool and getting married, working a career are long gone.

Medical students are entering college for undergrad between the ages of 17 and 30 now on an average.

From what I see a large percentage are taking 5 years to get accepted into medical school.

This increases the average age of medical students some from what used to be 21-22 to 23 and older. In fact many students are between 25 and 30 now.

So you did a major and you are 27 or 30 and think its crazy to go back do the pre reqs and apply to medical school in 1 or 2 years? Your too old?

No your not, in fact I argue your crazy for listening to others and not pursuing your true dream and desire.

Go for it!

At 47 I have my MD degree now, sure it was hard, sure I have more to go, but I accomplished what few people can do.

I'm a physician.

A web site that has others like me and a good place to learn and discuss this process is

Old Premeds

The oldest medical student I know was 68.

In my 9 years as a Hospice Nurse no one ever said "I'm glad I didn't become a .....(Physician)"

Yayyyy 40's in the house....Okaaayyy that sounds awesome. I am also 41 and will enter med school at 43 or 44. Sometimes I have trouble focusing intensely for long periods of time but that is just sheer boredom or attributed to study skills. I wanted to ask what kind of residency u will apply to? do you like IM, EM or FP or PC? Seems that alot of Foreign med graduates are going for the above choics. I am interested in any of those. I really like IM, EMm and FP because of the variety.

Thanks. I want to be in FP but IM is ok too. At this point I can try for outside the match or participate in the 2012 Match.

Hang in there you can do it as well.

If you haven't visit OPM (Old Premeds) a lot of help there.
